THE NEXT BIG THING: FACEBOOK MEETS WI-FI

In January 2012 we will introduce a brand new hotspot type, called "HOTSPOT FREE SOCIAL" and we are very excited about it :)

With this solution you can give out free internet access to any customer who "LIKEs" your Facebook page. This is a very good tool to promote your business as ONE LIKE will spread out the word to HUNDREDS of other people too (all friends of each customer).

We are also working on an advanced version of Hotspot FREE Social which will request a permission from the user to allow you to post on their walls. Every time the customer wants to use your wi-fi, a customized message will be posted on their walls like "I am using the free Wi-Fi at Joe's place!".

Social marketing is becoming very important to all businesses and by using the combination of FREE Wi-FI and social media you can create the buzz for your business very quickly and effective.

The service will be available in January, 2012, starting from $9.90/month so stay tuned!

VAT CHANGES

"Remember me" option for Wi-Fi Users at Login

We have added a "Remember me" functionality to the hotspot login pages.

You can hide this option from the Control Center which is especially useful when you are using desktop computers in your location and you wish to avoid that one user may log in with the previous user's details. You can turn this option OFF in the Control Center > Edit location > Splash Page Settings > "Display 'Remember Me' checkbox on Login Pages" checkbox.

If you are using custom skins, you need to update hotspotlogin_loginform.inc.html and main_combined.inc.html for combined login pages.

KNOWN ISSUES:
iOS devices and now the latest OSX Lion brings up a login popup safari when users connects to a wi-fi network and the OS cannot ping apple.com, this is how it knows that you don't have a full access to the internet so it brings up the splash page immediately. Unfortunately this behavior has its disadvantages. First, this is not a regular Safari browser and cookies are handled differently so the "remember me" functional will partially work (if you are using iOS devices), or won't work at all (if you are using Lion where the login popup doesn't handle cookies at all). Another thing is that when the user logs in, the popup disappears and the user won't see the popup which we display for the user with session statistics and logout information.

Notifications for Secondary Operators

Secondary operators can now get Router Alerts and sales notifications in a similar way as main operators. They can turn on/off alerts and set emails for it in the Control Center > Tools > System Settings menu.

Redirection upon successful login - UPDATE

Introducing New Payout Methods: USA ACH and Local Bank Transfer through Payoneer

There are 2 additional payout methods for payments that were collected through our primary processor:

USA ACH through Payoneer (NEW)

Direct deposit to a U.S. Bank account.
Payout Currency: USD
Fees: HotspotSystem transfers your money there for free, but Payoneer deduct some fees: $5 setup fee and $3 fee per transfer

Local Bank Transfer through Payoneer (NEW)

In some countries you can get your money via LOCAL bank transfer. The difference between this method and international wire transfer is that the incoming wire transfer will be from the same country (so there won't be additional intermediate bank charges and your bank fees will be probably lower than if you get an international wire transfer).

Fees: HotspotSystem transfers your money there for free, but Payoneer deduct some fees: $5.95 or $9.95 per transfer depending on your country

New Feature in Control Center: User Report

You can now list or export your users. The report includes the user's personal details and captured data fields, as well as total usage information (traffic and time), number of logins, number of purchases with total amount and user validity information.

You can access this report from the Control Center under Reports.

New Feature in Control Center: Manage Master Accounts

You can now manage your own Master Accounts. You can list them, create new ones, renew them for yourself. WHen you renew, 6 months will be added to the account.

What is "Master Account"?

With Master Accounts you can create users which can be used to log in to your hotspot locations without having to use a voucher or pay for the access. Master Accounts are also known as "Owner accounts" and usually made for the owners of the hotspots. You can create 2 Master Accounts per location for free.

You can find this as a new menu item in the Control Center under 'Manage'.

New feature in Control Center: Logs

A new panel has been added to the "Show User" page, which is called 'Logs'.

You can now see what happened to the user, these actions include:
- User creation with attributes (bandwidth and other limits)
- User deletion with detailed reason (for example expiration date reached or traffic limit reached)
- All modifications by the operator (changing password, limits, suspend, etc)
- All blocking by the system with reason (for example bad password, or simultaneous device limit reached, etc)

For example you can now check why the user has been expired so you can tell the user easily.

As always, if you click on a transaction you can see all activity and logs regarding to that transaction only. When you search for the user you can see all activity by the user.

CUSTOMIZE DATA CAPTURE

A new option is now available in the Control Center, called Data Capture which was the most requested feature by operators who are using the Hotspot SPLASH solution.

Here you can customize what fields you require from your users. You can turn on fields like email, or phone number, you can even create up to 5 custom question which your users have to fill out. You can find this option under Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data.

All of these fields will be available for you in the Control Center - once filled out - on the user's pages.

The option is also available for PRO locations (for credit card transactions and voucher registrations too) when the user is required to register.

TIP: you can even create a custom question in multiply languages. For this, you need to create a new skin (or use your current custom skin) and add a new language tag. Choose 'signup_cc' as the section and choose a tag name like CUSTOM1 and define your custom question. Then go to Data Capture settings, add a new custom question and write {CUSTOM1} as the question. When the registration page is parsed this will be replaced with the text you defined earlier in the language your customer is currently using.

This premium feature can be used by Hotspot PRO or Hotspot FREE subscribers as a standard feature, and currently it is also free for operators using Hotspot SPLASH.

If you are using custom skins, and changed the registration pages or the main_combined_autologin.inc.html template, this option will only work if you revert those templates back to original.

Introducing the Language Bar

We have replaced the static language selector on the splash pages with a new one, which can be edited dynamically so you can select which languages you would like to display to your customers. You can even hide all, making only one language available. The new option can be found in the Control Center, under Manage > Locations > Click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Splash Page Settings.

If you are using custom skins, and edited the header files, you need to revert the header files back to original to see the change. (header.inc.html, hotspotlogin_header1.inc.html, hotspotlogin_header2.inc.html)

Redirect After Successful Login

This is a feature requested by many, you can now redirect users to an URL you specify after they log in to the hotspot, instead of the default welcome page. Just enter the URL in the Control Center > Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Splash Page Settings > Redirect URL after Successful Login. Easy, huh? :)

Start Your Own Calling Card Service

When people are away from home they need a solution to call their friends or family on a cheap rate, because mobile roaming is an expensive thing. You can now offer them a possibility to buy calling cards from you which they can use to make cheap international phone calls.

How does it work?

You can set up a SIP gateway with your internet connection, connected to a landline phone which you can put at the reception. In the Control Center you can set what calling cards you would like to sell (for example cards worth 5 USD), then buy those cards from us, print them using our powerful printing tool and sell them to your users.

What is the business model?

We provide the system and pay for the calls. You provide the phone setup and bring the customer. We share the income so you get 50% and we get 50%.

How and when can I start the service?

You can start it right now. You can find a new menu in the Control Center, called "Calling Cards". You should start by going to our How to Start a Calling Cards Service page which provides all information, and the gateway setup guide.

Some notes:
- Calling cards can be used by any SIP software so customers can make phone calls using their own phone or laptop.
- If you connect the SIP Gateway to a hotspot router, the service will work without the need of having the users authenticate. This means that you can allow SIP calls with this service while users have to buy a hotspot access for all other activity on the internet.

Where there is a hotspot service running, chances are big that there is a need for this. So start your calling card service now and make your customers happy!

Redesigned Campground Skin, optimized for outdoors

We found out that the campground skin is too dark on some laptops especially when used outdoors. Therefore we made a new skin which is lighter and much more readable. You can find the new skin in the Control Center.

Extended support for mobile devices (Mobile Skins)

Mobile devices (especially iPhone and Android devices) are getting more and more popular. In our wi-fi hotspots the usage of mobile devices are now more than 10 percent. So we thought we give full support for these devices by creating special skin versions for every skin which are optimized for mobile devices. Larger input fields, large buttons, etc.

Ok so here is the deal.

- Locations that are using default system skins will now automatically display the new, optimized versions of those skins when the user is connected with a mobile device (this is auto-detected). Your custom logos will also be there.

- Locations with custom skins are working as they worked previously, which means that the same custom skin will be displayed for users with regular computers and users with mobile devices. However you can create a mobile version of your custom skin.

For this the following steps are required:

1. Create a new skin based on a mobile version, then customize it.

2. Edit your original custom skin, you can find a new option there on the second line where you can set the mobile version for that skin, just select the one you created in the first step.

Hope you will like this great enhancement of the system and this will probably result a better user experience and more conversions on your sales.

Hotspot Firmware Released for Ubiquiti AirMax devices

New Feature in Control Center: Location Groups

There is a new feautre in the Control Center, called Location Groups (can be found under 'Manage' menu). The menu is enabled only If you have more than 2 locations.

You can group locations to see statistics for the group. For example you have 3 locations in City 1, four locations in City 2. You can create a City 1 Group, and you can select the group in the Purchase Report to see sales stats for those locations groupped together.

Furthermore you can define the group as a 'Roaming Group', which means that people can use their account in all of the locations in the group (but only those who bought an access within one of the locations in the group). An example: let's say you have a campground chain with 10 campgrounds and you have a hotel chain with 4 hotels. But you don't want to enable global roaming because the prices are different in the hotels, so you don't want that people who bought an access in a campground can use the account in the hotels. So you can define two roaming groups so people can only roam within the group.

The roaming can also be disabled for a specific location, let's say you have a 5 start hotel where you only want to allow internet for people who bought the access there. Then you can disable roaming (isolate the location), in Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Default Limits > Enable roaming. If the location is part of a roaming location group, this will override the roaming settings for that specific location and roaming will not be allowed there.

Hotspot FREE with SMS password delivery

Hotspot FREE users now can now use a new way to give access to their customers. Voucher codes can now be sent to the user's mobile phones instead of givint the voucher to them personally.

This is an ideal solution if you want to authenticate your users, but you cannot give vouchers to them (there is no reception for example).

In some countries (Italy and France) the law requires to authenticate all users in public hotspots.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Instead of asking the user to enter a voucher code on your WI-Fi Splash page, they are required to enter a phone number. We send them the voucher code via SMS, then they can log in to the hotspot.
You can restrict the countries if you only want to have users from a specific country. You can also set a time interval restriction, within this interval users can only request one voucher code to the same phone number.

HOW MUCH DOES THE SERVICE COST?

The costs of the SMS delivery is included in the Hotspot FREE package, there are no extra fees.
The subscription fees are depending on the number of Voucher codes that your users activate in a month.

HOW CAN I SUBSCRIBE?

You just have to create a new Hotspot FREE location, then turn on the SMS to Voucher module in the Control Center > Manage > Locations > Click on name > Modify Hotspot > Splash Page Settings.
If you already have a Hotspot FREE location which you want to work that way, you have to set the option in the same menu.

NOTE: If you are using a custom Skin, then you may need to update sms.inc.html. To do so, just create a new Skin based on the same skin as you have created your custom skin, copy the code from sms.inc.html and paste it to your custom skin's sms.inc.html .

New Features in the Control Center

We are working hard to give you new features, enhancements based on your feedbacks. Some of the latest improvements are:

- Voucher codes are now working without activation. This means that users can log in directly with a voucher code (as a username and password) without requiring them to activate it first. This makes the process much easier and less confusing. When they enter the code into the login box, the voucher is activating automatically and the user will be logged in without any interruption.

You can turn off the Voucher module if you want and tell your users to log in as a user with valid access. However the voucher box is still good because people will know that they can get a voucher, and some people may find it easier to enter the voucher code into the voucher activation box.

- Online help in the Control Center: when you see dotted lines, just leave your mouse over the line for a few moments, then a popup will appear with detailed help.

- Help Desk is now available from the Control Center. You can send us a support ticket directly from the Control Center. You can find the option in the Tools menu.

SMS Authentication in your Hotspot

Today we released the SMS Authentication option.

When turned ON, users have to enter a phone number after they clicked on a package or entered a voucher code on the splash page. The system sends a 4 digit code which has to be entered back for verification. If verification was successful, the process continues as before (user can register an account or login in case of online payments OR activate the voucher). You can also restrict where the SMS can be sent (for example to italian phones only). That way only customers with a valid italian phone number can purchase access online by credit card or paypal for example.

The SMS authentication can be used for the following purposes:

- In some countries (f.e. Pisanu Law in Italy) user identification is necessary in public hotspots

- You can turn this option ON if you want to reduce the abuse of the system

- You can collect phone numbers and send information, advertisements, etc. to those phone numbers (especially useful in free hotspots). WARNING: You have to replace the NOTE text and tell users that they will get SMS messages if you want to use their phone numbers for this purpose.

You can turn this option ON in the Control Center > Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Splash Page Settings.

COMING SOON: Voucher codes via SMS (You don't have to give the voucher code to the user personally, they can get a code via SMS)

NOTE: If you're using a custom Skin, the sms part may appear wrong. For this to be fixed you can create a new Skin (based on the same layout as your existing custom skin), copy the contents of sms.inc.html and paste it to your existing skin's sms.inc.html.

Special Ubiquiti AirOS Firmware with embedded Hotspot Portal

We have released a new firmware for Ubiquiti 802.11 access points which is one of the most stable solutions to date.

Now you can use your Ubiquiti AP as not just an AP which has to be connected to a Hotspotsystem supported device, you can use it as a real Hotspot AP! The best thing is that you can keep the original functionality of your APs as this firmware was built from the original AirOS, but we have added a very important functionality, the Hotspot Portal!

The installation is super simple, you just have to upgrade the firmware (for free as there are no license fees) and change your operator username, all other settings are built-in!

Also, we have changed all skins a bit to include the new Adyen logos and updated credit card icons (AMEX with USD, EUR, GBP, DirectEBanking and iDEAL for EUR). If you are using custom skins you can see which file has been changed if you go to your skin, see the templates, if the name is displayed with green color you should revert it or update your skin template.

New Feature: Allowing simultaneous access from more than 1 device

In our system all accesses can only be used from 1 device simultaneously (sharing of account is not allowed), until now.

Now it is possible to create custom packages that can be used up to 5 devices simultaneously. This can be set in Customize > Packages menu.

Please note that this means that a user who buys this package will use up to 5 times more bandwidth AND up to 5 times more data traffic. However this option is not recommended with traffic limit packages, because it can be confusing for users. Let's see an example:

User buys a package for 1 hour valid for 2 devices with 100MB traffic limit. User logs in from the first devices, router will allow 100 MB of usage. After then the user logs in from the second device with the same account, the router will allow 100 MB, because there were no usage on the account yet. If the user stays logged in from both devices, he can use 100+100 MB. However, after downloaded 50 MB, the user logs out from the first device, then logs back in, all usage on the ACCOUNT will be summarized and deducted, so the sum of usage on BOTH DEVICES will be deducted from the original 100MB, so the user won't be able to use another 50MB, because the usage of the second device will also be deducted.

IF YOU ARE USING CUSTOM SKINS...

We are now using a 3-line display if a package is valid for more than 1 device. In this case 'index_package2_table.inc.html' template will be used instead of index_package_table.inc.html when displaying the package. Previous behavior was different, because 'index_package2_table.inc.html' was used if a package used other limits than the location's default limits.

Please revert your files according to that, if you modified those templates.

Under limits, "Valid for x devices" text will be visible. Currently this is displayed in english in every language, please help us with tranlations.

New Payout Schedule

By changing our primary payment processor we are now able to pay you out earlier. From this month we will send payments to our operators after the 15th day of the end of the actual month, not later than the 30th day. This means that you will receive your earnings approximately 1 month earlier than before.

The same is true for Paypal payouts.

So for example your earnings from September will be paid out between 15th-30th of October.

You should have received your august PayPal earnings now. If you didn't, please contact us.

New Feature in the Control Center: Session Report with simultaneous users chart

We would like to introduce a new feature in the Control Center: Session Report.

With this you get a full featured list of the login-logout sessions in your hotspots (radius accounting information). It contains full details, including the NAS Id and the MAC address of the device where the user is connected, the internal IP address and port that the device gave to the user, etc.

All can be exported to a csv file, along with full user information.

You can also have a chart generated which shows the simultaneous sessions based on your criteria, with a comparison chart from a previous period.

Some notes:
- Historical data is available only from february, 2010
- If you filter to a specific device, the real usage on the device can be different as only those devices report usage which have the hotspot part enabled. So if the router or AP gets the internet connection from an other device and acts as a repeater, then the usage of the device is gathered on the parent device (which runs the hotspot service).
- Secondary operators can also access the report if you gave access to user information (but only for those location which they have access of course)

The new report can be accessed in the Control Center > Reports menu.

New Features: Give a name to your device + device status history

You can now give a name to your devices. This is especially useful when you have lots of routers in one place, those were called WDS #1, WDS #2, etc. previously, but now you can give it a name so you can identify the device much easier.

This can be done from Manage > Locations, you can click on a WDS router in the list and you will reach the device's page. If you have only one router or would like to check out the main router, then click on the name of the location and click on the mac address from the device list.

Once you reach the device's page, you can also see the status history of the device with a nice chart so you will know immediately how many times your router was down and for how long within the previous month, and older downtimes are listed too as well. The history iof devices were recorded from march, 2010 so earlier notifications are not visible.

Primary Payment Processor Changes

We are adding a new payment gateway to the system on the 1st of July (today) to improve our services. The new payment gateway is powered by Adyen, a dutch company formed by the founders of Worldpay.

The new gateway has several new features and enhancements:

- Acceptance of AMEX in USD, EUR and GBP
- Acceptance of Sofort DirectEBanking in EUR for customer from Germany, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland
- Acceptance of additional payment methods coming soon (like Moneybookers or Direct Debit)
- Enhanced payment pages
- More currencies are supported (existing ones plus JPY, SGD, CZK, HKD, MXN, DKK, ILS, PHP, PLN, TWD)

For some currencies Adyen will replace RBS Worldpay as the primary payment gateway. Normally you don't have to do anything, payment pages should work as usual.

However if you set up your router manually (for example Mikrotik routers) you have to add the following in the router:

Allowed host: *.adyen.com
Allowed IPs: 82.199.90.136/29, 82.199.90.160/27, 91.212.42.0/24

We will add additional payment methods to the Adyen gateway in the next few days, we will post the requirements as they are available. We will also post some new details on our website soon.

Ubiquiti Pico2HP + Open-Mesh + Hotspot System

Upgrade Pico2HP to Open-Mesh

1. Download openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-pico2-squashfs.bin from http://dev.open-mesh.com/downloads/stable/firmware/

2. Put the Pico2HP in recovery mode (power on hold reset until flashing)

3. Give your machine a static on 192.168.1.10

4. Open a command prompt and type the following command:

tftp -i 192.168.1.20 put openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-pico2-squashfs.bin

5. It takes between 12 and 20 seconds before it tells you it was successfull. When its done unplug it from your machine and plug it into an internet source and wait about 7 1/2 minutes and it will stop flashing. Wait about 15 minutes and it will dial into the dashboard. If you dont want to wait just SSH or Use putty to get into it and use the 0p3nm35h password and just type update.

Hotspot Setup

1. You need to log in to the Open-Mesh Dashboard (you need to create an Open-Mesh network by clicking on "Add Network" link or use your exiting network login and click on "Edit Network").

2. Add your devices to your open-mesh dashboard. Select the "Add/Edit Nodes" button and place each node on the map by clicking and dragging it to the correct location. You will need to fill out the MAC ID of each node (found on the back of each unit if you are using an Open-Mesh hardware). If you are using an Open-Mesh compatible hardware, then you need to find out the MAC address of the hardware (usually can be found on the packaging box).

3. Select HotspotSystem.com as your radius config and set the nasid for your location. Nasid is:

- For your first location, or if you have only one location, the nasid is your operator username.

- If you are using multiple locations the nasid must be set the following way: operatorusername_locationid
(for example: john_2 , if your operator username is john, and you would like to set up location #2)

4. Change timezone to: Europe/London on the dashboard

Optional Step: You can add your own site to the end of the allowed domains list separated with a comma.

5. Press Update Network Settings on the top of the Dashboard.

How to setup Ubiquiti devices with DD-WRT & HotSpot System (Bullet, Nanostation, Powerstation, Picostation, etc.)

First you need to download the latest firmware:

- Go to the router database at www.dd-wrt.com
- Search for the router type you have (like "Nanostation", then and select your model)
- Select the latest v24 preSP2 (build 14144 or later) in the "Supported by" listbox
- Download the TFTP image

Then change the firmware to DD-WRT (you can also find a guide in DD-WRT forums):

- Connect to Nanostation's LAN port with fixed IP (set your computer to e.g. 192.168.1.2)
- You can test if the device is there if you ping the ip 192.168.1.20 continously (M$ Win cmd "ping -t 192.168.1.20").
- Put the device in fail safe mode (keep pressing the reset button, disconnect the power, wait 3 seconds and connect the power - keep the reset button pressed during the whole time - after a couple of seconds you will see blinking disco led lights, you can release the reset button now):

user@host:~$ tftp 192.168.1.20
tftp> bin
tftp> put ubnt_firmware.bin (use the name that you have downloaded)

Alternatively you can upgrade the firmware via the web interface at http://192.168.1.20, System > Upgrade(we have successfully uploaded the tftp image via webflash)

- Wait approximately 5 minutes for the firmware upgrade to be finished

Set up HotspotSystem with DD-WRT:

- Open the new DD-WRT page at http://192.168.1.1, then change username/password
- Go to Setup > Basic setup > WAN Connection Type to DHCP, then press SAVE SETTINGS (we will apply settings later)

- Connect Nanostation's LAN port to a local network with internet connection
- Connect your computer wirelessly to SSID: dd-wrt
- Go to http://192.168.1.1, on Services > Hotspot > Hotspot System has to be enabled, fill out your Operator Username and Location ID

Press APPLY SETTINGS.

You can change SSID to a hotspot name like "Cheap Hotspot" at Wireless > Basic Settings.

You are done!

Device List

We have silently updated the Manage > Locations > View Location page, which now has a device list table.

The table list all of your installed devices with mac address, IP address, system load, uptime, OS and the date and time of last report. You can even sort devices if you want.

Popup Status Window Redesigned

When a Wi-Fi user logs in to your hotspot, a status window appears which shows the usage and some other window.

We have redesigned this, showing more information like session time and usage, remaining traffic (if the user has a traffic limit) and remaining time.

Traffic is calculated from the accounting information. The router is sending the usage periodically to the router (in every 100 seconds), so when the user hits refresh, the usage stats may not show the real usage.

The status window looks the same in every skins. If you are using a custom skin and modified the popup html code, you should revert it to the original and do the modifications again. If you didn't modify that code, then it will be automatically updated fro your skin, there is nothing you have to do.

Small changes in Locations List

You can now see the last activity of each routers when you put the cursor over the load graph.

Last activity is a user log in, log out or interim updates.

If the router is not sending life signals for some reason, but there was an activity in the last 2 hours, then it will not say "DOWN", it will say "UP, but not sending life signals".
In this case you should turn off any firewalls, especially any SPI Firewalls you may have on your network.

Run commands on your router remotely!

You can now run remote commands on any DD-WRT/HotspotWRT/CoovaAP routers through the Control Center.

Requirements:

- Your routers must send life signals in every hour which are recorded in the Control Center (Router Alert function) properly.
- If you have installed your router before 1st of April, 2010, then you need to execute a patch or re-setup your router. You also need this patch if you have installed dd-wrt through the built-in hotspotsystem setup (latest pre-SP2 firmwares).

Why is this good for you?

Because you can remotely reboot or change settings on your router without having to go to the router's admin interface!

You can run any commands, but we have pre-set some important functions for you, like:

- Reboot
- Change SSID
- Change TX Power
- Change DNS
- Add/Remove one Host/IP to the WhiteList
- Add/Remove a Domain and its Subdomains to the WhiteList (HotspotWRT/Coova only)
- Display Login Box on Main Splash Page (Combined Splash/Login page)

These are just preconfigured example commands, but you can use any command you wish (for example you can play with iptables)

How does it work?

When the router sends a life signal (in every hour), it will execute the commands you recorded. This means you may have to wait 1 hour for the command to be executed. You can record multiple commands, all will be executed at once.

Where can I execute a command?

In the Control Center, go to Manage > Locations > Click on location > scroll at the bottom. Choose a command or create your own and choose the mac address of the router, then press submit.

12th, March 2010 - Introducing Hotspot SPLASH

Hotspot SPLASH is for those who want to offer a Free Wi-Fi service (in a café, tourist attraction, airport, etc), but want to show a splash page first where users are forwarded before they can use the internet. There are several reasons why Hotspot Operators want to do that:

- they want to show a specialized page of the place (tourist information, daily menus, etc)
- they want to show advertisements to users
- they have special terms which users have to accept before they can use the internet

Hotspot SPLASH Features:

- There is no need to enter any username or password for the users to log in to the hotspot. Users have to click on the continue button and access is granted automatically.
- You can set a time interval and/or a traffic limit which is allowed for the user to browse the internet. After this, the user will be forwarded back to your splash page.
- You can set the bandwidth limits for users.
- The landing page can be fully customized, but you can use our existing built-in Skins as a base.
- You can track the usage of each MAC address in the Control Center.

Pricing: the service is currently free. In the future you may have to pay a small monthly fee for high traffic locations (over 1000 accesses/month).

What happens with the card if I don't get a payment from you in every month?

If the balance on the card is $0 for 60 days, it will be deactivated. You can lower the payment limit to $100 to receive frequent payments, or be sure to leave some money on the card (and keep in mind that they will deduct a monthly fee from the balance every month).

How does the Prepaid Mastercard work?

Payoneer's system requires an initial approval from Payoneer. After your application is reviewed and approved, a personalized debit card will be mailed to you. Once received and activated (follow instructions given by them), you can use it like any other Mastercard, to pay directly at merchants or to withdraw from an ATM machine. What are the fees of Payoneer's Prepaid Mastercard?

If I receive a prepaid MasterCard card, what am I committed to?

Nothing. You can use the card to obtain cash for your funds, use it in stores or online. If you decide to use the card, it can be loaded and used multiple times. Once the money on the card is depleted, and your card has a zero balance for 60 days, the card will automatically be deactivated and you have no further obligations with respect to the card.

What happens to my card if I don't use it?

If the card value is depleted and remains at a zero balance, no monthly maintenance fees are charged until funds are loaded onto the card again.

What foreign exchange (FX) rate is used?

Payoneer's Prepaid Mastercards are USD based. If you charge your customers in EUR, GBP, AUD, NZD or SEK, we will convert this amount to USD before loading your card using our bank's exchange rates.

In a non-USD based ATM or purchase, there will be an other conversion. In this case, Foreign Exchange Conversion rate is computed at the time of the transaction, whether at a retail venue or at an ATM. Conversion rates are calculated based on daily rates adopted by MasterCard (can be up to 2.2% above market rate), any fees applicable by the retail or ATM location and other processing entities.

How does my card work at an ATM?

Your card can be used at any ATM that displays the MasterCard acceptance mark. Withdrawal limits at ATMs may vary. The daily withdrawal limit is generally $1000, but the ATM you choose may be limited to providing a lower amount.

1. Log in to the Control Center, then click on Tools & Settings > Your Profile.
2. Under „ PAYOUT INFORMATION for Hotspot PRO Locations” click on the Payoneer logo and apply for the card.
3. To receive payments to your Payoneer Master card, click on the „ Payoneer Mastercard” as your Payout method for Regular Credit Card Payments and press the „Modify” button.

Make sure to sign up by March 5th so you can have the card in hand for the first payment that will be made on the middle of March.

Another important note: Payoneers’s Prepaid Mastercard is USD based. Before payments, we will convert the payout amount to USD using our local bank’s rates. Once the money is loaded on the card and you wish to get this money in any other currency than USD, MasterCard will convert the amount to the desired currency.

Payoneer’s Prepaid Mastercard has a one-time setup fee of $9.95 USD, but if you apply for the card before March 5th and you get at least $150 USD payment to the card within 3 months, you will get the $9.95 USD setup fee refunded by Payoneer.

Improved Support for Mikrotik Routers

Mikrotik routers were supported already, but you had to use the built-in login page of RouterOS, and link back to our splash page.

Now it is possible to display our well-designed splash pages directly. The login box will be embedded in the splash page.

Campground Skin Released

Displaying the Login Box on the Main Splash Page

By default, customers have to log in on a separate page, not on the main splash page. This is better because when the customers see "Click here to log in", then the link goes to a page where the login box is displayed only so it's very straight-forward.

It is now possible to combine (merge) the login box with the main splash page, so the login box will be displayed above the package selection or voucher activation box. Login links will lead the customers back to this page.

Changes on Locations Page

Several new features has been added to the Locations page which you can access from the Manage menu.

1. We have rewritten the code which generated the Locations page, so it should be much faster now.

2. You can now see the exact number of logged in users on all of your routers, including WDS routers! The first number besides each router icon represents the number of users who bought an access on that specific location and the access is still valid. The second number is the number of users who are logged in to that specific router, including roaming users and master accounts.

If you are using multiple locations, your users can roam between your locations (f.e. if they bought an access in location #1, they can log in to location #2, etc). This can be turned off in Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Set Default Limits.

So if you see something like 1/2, then it's not a bug in the system, because it means that 1 user has bought an access in that location which is still valid, but maybe there are roaming users or master accounts logged in to that router.

3. Last activity can also be seen if you place your mouse over the chart which represents the router's current load OR if your router is not sending life signals (for example Mikrotik or Mesh routers) you can now see the last activity date instead of "DOWN". Last activity date is the date of last communication with the router (login date, logout date or accounting updates)

Switch from KeZone Hotspot Software by Timico

I don't know how many people are out there who may want to change their KeZone hotspot software provided by Timico.

It's not an easy thing because there is only ssh access to the router so they have to use tftp to change the hotspot software.

Only people that were/are connected to KeZone/Timico are able to obtain the password as it's their broadband password.

What is "Mesh Network"?

Mesh networking is a type of networking wherein each node in the network may act as an independent router, regardless of whether it is connected to another network or not. It allows for continuous connections and reconfiguration around broken or blocked paths by “hopping” from node to node until the destination is reached.

Hotspot Firmware Comparison

We have released a new firmware recently, called 'HotspotWRT'.

The firmware is more stable compared to DD-WRT, so if you have lots of users, consider switching to it. Firmware is based on OpenWRT/White Russian/CoovaAP.

How to continue your Boingo Hotspot In a Box Service?

If you are looking for Boingo's Hotspot In a Box solution, don't look further. Boingo has stopped this service recently, but we can offer a perfect alternative.

It has came to our attention that Boingo stopped offering their Hotspot In a Box service to businesses recently.

In 2004 Boingo was one of the first companies who offered a service to small businesses which enabled them to create a Wi-Fi hotspot service.

Now hundreds (or thousands?) of them left without the service, the question is what they can do now?

The answer: continue the service with HotSpotSystem.com.

DD-WRT v24 SP1 httpd vulnerability

As reported at www.miw0rm.com there is a vulnerability in the http-server for the DD-WRT management GUI that can be used for execution of an exploit to gain control over the router.

By default, if you have used our DD-WRT install guide, followed those steps only, and didn't enable the remote web gui management in the router, your router is safe.

BUT if you have enabled the remote web gui management in the Administration tab AND your router is connected directly to the internet (is not behind another router, but is connecting to the ADSL modem directly with an ADSL username or password for example), your router is vulnerable and you should do one of the following to make your router safe:

- You can turn off the remote web gui management under the Administration tab in the router's admin panel if you don't need this function

- You can update your firewall settings through the Administration > Commands tab. Press EDIT in the firewall section and paste these commands into the box:

insmod ipt_webstr
ln -s /dev/null /tmp/exec.tmp
iptables -D INPUT -p tcp -m tcp -m webstr --url cgi-bin -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -m tcp -m webstr --url cgi-bin -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset

then press "Save Firewall" and reboot your router.

If you do this, be sure that if you have HTTPS Management turned ON under > Administration > Management > Remote Access, then turn it off.

- You can replace the DD-WRT firmware to a newer one (latest is v24 preSP2 build 12533), you can download it from dd-wrt.com using the router search. However, this firmware is a beta firmware, so use it at your own risk. The setup command from the Control Center should work, but be sure to reset the firmware to factory defaults before using the command.

- You can change your firmware to CoovaAP. Only do this if you don't use special functions in DD-WRT like the secondary SSID function.

About the installation:

Buffalo is controlling everything, it's in the office, so cat5 is going to
bar/reception area where's small d-link ap and other one goes to big antenna where's big d-link ap and big antenna, we also plan to put couple of ap-s to the back of the hotel area, so everything is filled, because big antenna makes pretty much black hole where it is, but in the mean time it's working well around the hotel, like 500m from hotel is pretty good reception, so all the ap-s have same SSID called BEACH ROAD HOTEL.

Important Service Changes

- FROM 15th June 2009, Contracting Company information will be MANDATORY. If you haven't filled out the company information in your Profile, please do so by logging in to the Control Center and modify your Profile. If you don't have a company, you can put your own name and address there so you can run the service as an individual. IMPORTANT: You won't be able to accept payments in your Hotspot until you fill out that information.

Also, the new Generic / Green Skin will be applied to all locations except if you send a ticket and asking us to leave your existing Skin. You will also be able to change back the Skin after we change it.

- FROM 1st of July 2009, VAT will be 25% instead of 20%. If your company resides in the EU and don't have a valid VAT number, we will add 25% to our commission from the 1st of July 2009.

- BROWSER ISSUES: We have had some problems with the Control Center with IE8, this issue has been resolved. We also have problems with Safari4 Beta, please upgrade it to FINAL version and clear all cookies if you experience problems.

New Skin is available for Splash Pages

A new skin has been released in the Control Center which can be used for Wi-Fi Start (Splash) pages.

The new Skin is called "Generic / Green", it's "Generic" because it is suitable for all kind of locations, and it's "Green" because there are green circles in the package selection pages.

What's new in this Skin?

- Much cleaner and fresh design which replaces the old one that we've been using for 3 years
- More informal: Bandwidth and traffic limits are clearly visible
- Advanced data verification with ajax: Username and other registration data are checked in real-time against our database which helps users to fill out the registration form more easily
- Easily readable on Wi-Fi phones
- Works perfectly with IE, Firefox, Safari

IMPORTANT: We will change the Skin automatically at the end of the week for ALL OPERATORS who are using the default skin now. If you wish to stay with the old design, please send us a Help Desk ticket.

For those who are using a customized skin, there will be no changes (you can change to the new design manually).

You can change the Skin in the Control Center if you Modify Hotspot Location / Splash Page Settings.

We're planning more Skin releases in the future, more color options will be coming for the Generic Skin, and we will release type-specific Skins too for hotels, campgrounds, etc.

Control Center has been released

We released the Control Center today which replaces our current Operator Area.

Control Center is part of a full redesign process which we will release in 3 stages.

The first one is the Control Center, then we will replace our main information pages, and there will also be a new page for Wi-Fi users with the same layout.

In the new Control Center, there is a well-structured menu in the top so you can now find functions more easily.

We have also added support for Google Maps, so you can now view your locations on a map.

Personal and Payout info menu is now called 'Profile'.

Please log in and try out the New Control Center, get familiar with it. If you need help, you can download the Control Center Guide which has also updated.

Optional Voucher Registration

From now on you can force users with Pre-Paid or Free Vouchers to register before they can activate the voucher. This is required by the law in some countries, but you can also use it to collect personal information from your users, like e-mail addresses. Users personal data can easily be exported in the Transactions menu.

So here's how it works:

You can enable this option on a per location basis, just click on Hotspot Locations > Select Location > Manage Location > Require Registration of Vouchers in the Start Page Settings section.

After then the following will happen:

Users enter the code as before on the Hotspot Start page. If the code was valid, the same registration form appears as if it was a credit card transaction. Users have to choose a username, password, and fill out other registration details, like name, postal address, email address, etc. After users fill out the form, the activation link will be shown, along with the card details (expiration, bandwidth, etc).

The user registration is a system-wide process, so if the same user enters an other voucher code on the Hotspot Start page, then he or she can use the username and password which he/she has registered previously.

IMPORTANT: Users have to use their username and password instead of the voucher code when they log in to the Hotspot!

Optional Access to Vouchers For Secondary Operators

You can now grant access to Secondary Operators so they can access Vouchers for the location you specify. This means that they can print the Vouchers for themselves.
Additionally, you can grant/prohibit access to the Modify Vouchers' Layout page to allow/prevent to modify the Voucher prints.

Monthly Recurring Subscriptions

From now on you can create a monthly custom package with recurring payments.

This is very useful if you have long-term paying customers.

All you have to do is to select the "Recurring payment" option on the Create or Modify Custom Package page. Then your splash page will change automatically and the package will show "recurring payment" text so your users can easily identify that the amount will be charged in every month.

Your users can cancel the subscription any time on Worldpay's or PayPal's website, or we can cancel it for them too. Our refund policy says:

"If you have paid for HotSpot access through the system or paid for a service, you have right to cancel within seven days of the purchase in case you haven't used the service that you've paid for. If you cancel your order, you will have your payment returned."

So if a customer forgets to cancel the subscription, he/she can cancel it within 7 days and we will refund the amount of the last charge, if he/she didn't use the account during that period.

One more thing: credit card companies don't charge recurring users on an exact time when 1 month expires. So to ensure continuos hotspot access, users will get 1 month access until the end of the day. For example if they buy the monthly access at 13:00 PM on 26th March, 2009, they will have access until 23:59PM on 26th April, 2009. Their card will be charged at some time on 26th, April 2009 which will add an other month for them.

Recurring option is available only with monthly packages.

Custom Login, Logout URL support for Custom APs/Routers

By default, our system is using http://192.168.182.1:3990/prelogin as a user login URL which is supported by DD-WRT/Chillispot/Coova.

Now you can customize this link if you're using an other device which is using an other URL format to call the login/logout pages.

Support for CoovaAP

Managing Hotspot Users

Bookkeeping of your Hotspot Income

It's a new year so it's time to close your last year's accounting.

Probably most of you followed local bookkeeping and tax rules but we thought we send you some basic information regarding this. However credit card transactions happen automaticaly, you should book these transactions and should pay your tax according to your country's rules.

You can view all your transactions on your operator page, you can export them too so you can easily keep track of your sales anytime.
Your gross hotspot income should be booked before deducting any charges.

Let's see an example: someone bought an access for 4.90, you should book this item in your books with the value of 4.90. Value added tax (VAT) is
different in every country so for example if VAT exists in your country and let's say it's 10% you should book 0.45 as VAT and 4.45 as net income.
This is not the amount that you receive because we deduct 30% transaction fee so you should also book the 30% transaction fee as an expense.

So in a country where the vat is 10% and you sold an access for 4.90:

User paid: 4.90
Net income: 4.45
VAT: 0.45 (10% of net value)
Expense: 1.47 (hotspotsystem fee)

You will receive the gross amount (sale value minus fee) from us, VAT and profit tax should be paid by you to your local tax authority.
In case of prepaid card sale you should follow these same rules however your expense is the cost of the prepaid vouchers.
For those who need official invoice from our company to book your expenses invoices can be downloaded from your operator admin page under payouts menu.

Master account changes

From the 1st of February, 2009, simultaneous access from multiple computers using 1 master account will be blocked.

If you gave the master account information to multiple users, you'd need multiple master accounts for them.

You can have 2 master accounts per location for free. If you need more, you need to pay a small fee.

Access Restrictions for Secondary Operators

You can now define which sections you would like the secondary operator have access to.

These sections are:

- Hotspot Location information, including router's state information, logged in/not logged in but active users
- User's personal information, User Search
- Transactions and sales (gross amounts only)
- Purchase report (gross amounts only)
- Usage report

You can also set a start date, so Secondary Operators won't see any historical data if you don't want to.

All of these can be set in the Manage Secondary Logins menu.

SAVE 40% ON PRE-PAID VOUCHERS

From now on, until 5th, November Midnight GMT, you can get your Vouchers 40% cheaper than the official price.

Normally you can buy vouchers for 30% of the end-user price, which means you can keep 70% when you sell it. With this promotion you can buy vouchers for only 18% of the end user price (40% discount).

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BUY VOUCHERS?

If you ordered Pre-Paid Vouchers before, you just have to go to the Wi-Fi Shop and buy the Vouchers there. First timers have to download and fill out our Pre-Paid Price Definition, send it to us via email or fax it to +36-1-269-49-62 or attach it in a ticket in the Help Desk. Then we'll set the prices in the system and will let you know when you can buy the Vouchers.

WHEN WILL THE VOUCHERS EXPIRE?

Vouchers will not expire until you sell them, so don't worry if your location is currently not operating. You can sell the Vouchers in the next season too.

HOW CAN I USE THE VOUCHERS?

Vouchers can be printed online with the Voucher System, after you log in to the Operator Area. You can design your own card, print it, or you can also export it in CSV format. If you want to print them, the system creates a high quality PDF file which you can print easily onto Avery Business Cards or to plain papers.

TIPS & TRICKS: DIFFERENT METHODS TO SELL VOUCHERS

The most easiest way to sell Vouchers is when you sell it for cash at the reception of the location. But there are other ways.

1. FOR HOTELS: INCLUDE THE PRICE IN THE BILL

You can give the voucher to your guest, then include it's price in the bill when the guest checks out.

2. SMS PAYMENTS

As you can export the codes in a csv file, you can easily use a mobile provider to accept payments via SMS in your location. The user sends a text message, then receives the voucher code to his/her mobile phone (one code from the exported csv file). He/she can activate this code on the hotspot's start page and log in to the hotspot. You can include an advertisement on your start page, which advertises this sms payment solution. For this you have to find a local mobile provider or use an international provider like SMSKambi which supports sms payments in 23 countries.

User Search

We've added a new feature to the Operator Area: User Search.

You can search users and see whether their account is valid or expired, see their registration details and all time usage.

You can also search Voucher codes to find out, if the Voucher code is still valid (is not activated), or activated but not used, used and still valid or expired.

You don't have to enter the full username, name, email or transaction id, you can do partial searches.

Why is this useful? There are several cases where this feature is important.

1. If a user has problems and there is a help desk at the location, they can check the user out
2. If the customer writes an email or talks to the operator via phone, the operator can easily trace the user
3. If the location sell vouchers, and someone returns with a voucher saying it's not working, they can easily check the voucher code

etc, etc.

This feature is also working for Secondary Operators.

Traffic limit now includes upload traffic

We've changed the way we count traffic limits, as of today. The change had to be made because most ISPs are also calculating the fees of an internet line by summarizing download and upload traffic, not just the download traffic.

Previously, only downloaded traffic was counted. Now the system counts the download and upload traffic by default.

If you would like to have a download only data traffic limit, you need to change your packages in the Operator Area. You can also create new packages and choose if you want to include download and upload traffic, or download only.

If you're using Vouchers and want to calculate the limits via the old way (count download traffic only), please send us a message as soon as possible so we can set the vouchers that way.

This change won't affect old users, only new transactions and Voucher activations.

Voucher System

We proudly present a brand new feature in the Operator Area: the Voucher System.

With this system you can create and print high quality Vouchers from the Operator Area. You can also use the system to see all of your vouchers that were generated, you can find out which is valid and which was activated. You can also export the codes in CSV format so you can import the data to somewhere else. For example if you need to print the codes on to a receipt, you can import the codes to your database and print the codes from there.

If you want to print the Vouchers, the system creates high quality PDF files which you can print on plain papers or Avery Business cards. You can choose from different background color options and you can also use your own background.

We will update the documentation for this soon, and there will also be a FAQ for the Voucher System.

Until then feel free to try the new system (you can find it in the menu of the Operator Area) and let us know if you have questions or problems. If you haven't used the Pre-Paid card options yet, it is now time to order some codes via the Wi-Fi Shop. Be sure to send us the Price Definition Appendix first so we can set the prices in the system.

Different versions of DD-WRT v24

There are 4 different DD-WRT v24 firmware versions that are compatible with our system:

STANDARD - Standard version contains the following modules: Chillispot, JFFS2, kaid, MMC/SD Card Support, PPTP/PPTP Client, radvd, RFlow, Samba/CIFS client, SNMP, SSH, UPnP, Wiviz.

NOKAID - All features from Standard except KAI (Kai Console Gaming). USE THIS FIRMWARE IF YOU UPGRADE DIRECTLY FROM LIKSYS FIRMWARE, because it is 300 Kb less, than the standard version, so you can upgrade directly.

MEGA - Standard features, plus OpenVPN and SIPatH. This firmware can only be used in devices which contain at least 64 MB ROM (WRT54GL contains 32 MB only).

SPECIAL - Special version of DD-WRT has extended QoS capabilities: set maximum bandwidth available per netmask/MAC address (even for different vlans), set a default rule for any unconfigured netmask/MAC address. Special version is a paid version of DD-WRT.

Improved DD-WRT v24 Support

Due to the increased popularity of DD-WRT v24, we are now offering improved support for this new firmware.

We've updated the installation video and instructions, and we're now suggesting every operators to use the new v24 SP1 firmware release.

Upgrading the firmware to DD-WRT v24 SP1 is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all hotspot operators with high traffic locations (for locations that often have 5 or more simultaneous users logged in to the hotspot). We've found out that the new firmware is much more stable than v23 SP2 under these circumstances.

DD-WRT v24 also offers more features, includes a traffic grapher, support for multiple SSID's and more.

The setup script is now fully compatible with v24, there is no need to manually set anything after running the setup script.

Also, you can set a few options for the setup script, which are the following:

Firmware version: v24 or v23 (for those who still want to setup the router with DD-WRT v23)

Router's internal IP: You can change the subnet here. Default is 192.168.20.1, but we found out that there are situations, where you'd like to install multiple routers on the same network, so changing the subnet before installation will avoid IP conflicts.

Setup Type: You can now select if the router is the single/first router at the location, or you're using a second, third, etc. via WDS. That way you'll get the Router Alert working for all your routers.

You can find these options in the Operator Area, above the setup command for a location. Changing any settings will automatically update the setup command, so you can copy+paste it to the router's command box via a very simply way.

Usage Report: New Feature in the Operator Area

There is another new feature for Operators and Secondary Operators, which is called: Usage Report.

Now you can see the traffic on your routers within a period which you can define.
You can break down by days or months, or by users.

It'll be interesting to see which user generated the most traffic, what were the busiest days or months, or - if you're using multiple locations - you can see what location generated the most traffic.

Please note that usage statistics are just approximate, the real usage can be different.
What the script does is to count sessions (every time a user logs in, a new session will be generated), which were started between the dates you select. For example if you select 2008-06-01 as a start date, it will count all users who logged in after 2008-06-01 00:00:00. It won't count those sessions that were started before this date, even if the user actually logged out after the start date. The same is true for the end date.

Extend Coverage of Your Wi-Fi Hotspot (WDS)

The most frequently asked question by Hotspot Operators is: How can i extend my Hotspot's coverage?

There are several methods for that.

The best way is to set up another internet source if you can, away from the first source (order one more ADSL line for example) and connect another router to that source. This is good for busy venues.

But you can extend your existing coverage by setting up repeaters. You can connect 2 routers by cable, but you can also connect 2 or more routers via WDS (Wireless Distribution System).
You can find a well written tutorial here about setting up WDS.

There are 2 methods to get WDS routers working with Hotspot System:

1) You can set the first router's LAN port to get through the Hotspot login page as well. The second router will receive paid internet so the same start page will be displayed to anyone who connect to the second router. With this method you can use any repeaters. The disadvantage is that the Router Alert function will not work so you will not know when the WDS router is down.

2) You give free internet to the second router (by leaving the LAN ports to have FREE internet access), and run the same setup command on the second router. For busy venues, this is the suggested method because it will reduce the system load on the first router (there will be 2 routers who will handle Hotspot accesses).

Alternatively you can add a new location to your account and run the command for this location to track which routers were used by your customers.

If you're using the same location's command on both routers, don't forget to add '_wds' to the Radius NAS ID to get Router Alerts from the WDS router too (on the Chillispot page of the router's admin panel). If you're using more WDS routers, you can add '_wds_2', '_wds_3', etc, AND turn off SPI Firewalls on the routers (Security tab).

Router Alert Support for WDS Routers

If you're using WDS to extend your Hotspot coverage, you can now get life signals from your WDS Router. This method is working only if you run Chillispot on both routers and if you've ran the same location's command on both routers (if you're using a different location on the WDS Router, the Router Alert function will work automatically).

To get the Router Alert function working for your WDS Router, you have to do the following:

1. Add '_wds' to the Radius NAS ID. So if the Radius NAS ID was 'operator', then modify it to 'operator_wds'. If it was 'operator_2', then modify it to 'operator_2_wds'. If you are using multiple WDS routers, you can add a number to it, so it will be 'operator_wds_2' or 'operator_2_wds_2'. (Administration/Hotspot or Services/Hotspot > Chillispot tab on the router's admin panel)

2. You have to turn off the SPI Firewall on the routers (Security tab on the router's admin panel)

Windows Vista Wireless Incompatibility Issues

We have just learned that there can be incompatibility issues with Windows Vista users, when they are trying to connect to your Hotspot. The most important thing that EVERY OPERATOR MUST CHECK is the Wireless Channel which the Hotspot uses.

You must set the Wireless Channel to 11 OR BELOW, otherwise some Windows Vista users will have problems connecting to the Hotspot.

Go to Wireless > Basic Settings and change the Wireless Channel to a number between 1-11. Don't forget to test the hotspot after doing this, because there can be interferences on that channel. Try Channel 1, 6 and 11 first, these are the most compatible ones.

DD-WRT v24 Compatibility (UPDATED)

DD-WRT v24 final came out a few days ago ( click here for binary downloads ). Our Hotspot System is fully compatible with v24, so if you'd like to use this firmware to create your Wi-Fi hotspot, you need to do the following:

The installation can be done the same way as v23, via the automatic command. If you upgrade from the original LinkSys firmware, it is recommended to upgrade it with the NoKaid firmware. Other option is to upgrade it with the mini, then the NoKaid/Standard.

After that your Hotspot router will be working perfectly, including the Router Alert feature. If you have already installed/upgraded to v24, then Reset the router to Factory Defaults, then run the command again.

It is now recommended to upgrade to v24 if you used v23 before as this release is much stable, especially when you have lots of Wi-Fi hotspot users connecting simultaneously to the router.

Note: After you run the command, be sure that DHCP Interface is set to "WLAN" in the Services > Hotspot menu.

Support for your Hotspot users

Some changes has been made related to the support for your Wi-Fi Hotspot users.

When it comes to support, your hotspot users have the following alternatives:

1. They can contact you directly using the location's contact details you've provided for the location.
2. They can use the online form. The content of the form is sent to us (Hotspot System Staff) AND your contact email additionally (this is a new feature).
3. They can contact us using our standard Help Desk, or phone and fax numbers.

The reason why we send the form to you too is that there are several tasks that have to be handled by the Operator (f.e. the user cannot connect to the router, has low signal problems, need a tax invoice, etc.), and there are others that have to be handled by us (f.e. the user paid twice by accident and needs a refund, or cannot login because of mistyping the username or password, etc.

More features added for Secondary Logins

Secondary Logins are sub-accounts that are created by the Operators. For example if an operator runs a camping network, he can create Secondary Logins for each campground where the local camping owner or receptionist can check/view some important information about the hotspot. Operators assign which location(s) are viewable by a Secondary Login.

Some new functions have been added to Secondary Logins:

- Hotspot Locations menu (View a list of assigned locations, check system load, check active/logged-in users, view basic hotspot information)
- Purchase report on Gross Purchases only: this is very useful if the local owner sells Pre-Paid cards, so after each month he can generate a report so he can see how much money he collected in that month.

They can also see transactions, and usage by hotspot users.

RSS feed is also working so they can check their transaction real time.

View active / logged-in users

This is a long-awaited feature and we have added this by popular request.

You can now see who has valid account to a hotspot, and you can also see, who is currently logged-in.

Go to 'Hotspot Locations'. You can see a router icon on the right, with two numbers next to it. It shows how many users have valid account (first number) and how many are logged in (second number). When you click on these numbers you can get a list of the users in details, with expiration, last login date and usage.

Live RSS Stats

You can now use your favorite RSS reader to check your statistics LIVE without having to log in each time. The feed includes the total summary of purchases and gross profit for today, yesterday, this month, previous month and also contains the last 10 transactions (date, package, price, location) and the customer's details (name, country, username).

To find out the URL of your RSS feed, log in to the Operator Area and find 'Live RSS Stats' on the upper right.

Purchase Stats - April, 2008

Here're some interesting information about user's purchase at all Hotspots operated by HotSpotSystem.com.

In the first chart you can see that payments by PayPal are less than 10%. That's why it is important to accept credit card payments directly in your Hotspot (this is a feature which you can rarely find with other hotspot solutions).

Visa is ahead with almost 60% (including Visa Delta), Mastercard is below 40%. As you can see you can accept Visa Delta cards too in your Hotspot.

This is a recommended option for all operators in that area, especially Australia and New Zealand.

Changes regarding the Custom Packages

When you've created a custom package, there were some optional parameters, like download/upload bandwidth/traffic limits. If you haven't set any limits, then the limits were set to unlimited.

We've found out that in most cases it's not recommended to set the bandwidth limits to unlimited, because with multiple users, for example if one user is uploading large files, it would slow down the other users' speeds dramatically.

There's an option now in the package creation page, where you can select 'Use location's default' (this is cheked by default when you create a package). This means that if a user buys this package, the location's default limits would be assigned to it (which you can set for each locations at 'HotSpot Locations' > Click on the location > 'Modify Hotspot Data').

If you're using Custom Packages please review your packages to ensure that you have set the correct limits. For reviewing your package listing, just go to 'HotSpot Locations' > click on name, and see what limits are used by your packages under 'Hotspot Packages'.

If you're using the Default Packages, then there're no changes, default packages will use the default limits which you can set at 'HotSpot Locations' > Click on the location > 'Modify Hotspot Data'.

'CHARTS': New Feature in the Operator Area

'CHARTS': NEW FEATURE IN THE OPERATOR AREA

A brand new feature is available in the Operator Area, called 'Charts'.

Currently there are 2 types of charts available, which contains the following charts:

1.SHOPPER CHARTS

- Country of Registered Users
- Language of Registered Users
- Type of Credit/Debit Cards
- Credit Card vs PayPal vs PrePaid Card

2. PURCHASE CHARTS

- All sales by the length of accesses
- All sales by access packages
- All sales by the price of accesses
- Credit Card/PayPal income by HotSpot Locations
- All income by HotSpot Locations

All charts can be filtered by date and by location.

These charts can be extremely useful to analyze the productivity of your hotspot(s).

We'll add more charts to the Operator Area soon, but until then, feel free to write your opinions to us about this.

HOTSPOT LOCATIONS OVERVIEW CHANGE WITH SYSTEM LOAD

We have changed the look of 'HotSpot Locations', now you can see your router's status on this page, and the system load if the router is online.

System load is a standard unix load, explained here: http://www.lifeaftercoffee.com/2006/03/13/unix-load-averages-explained/

We're displaying the 1 minute average, but you can see all 3 averages by clicking on the location.
On the routers, the load should not be more than 2, but if it's around or more than 1.00, you should consider setting up another or a more powerful router on that location.

WorldPay System Upgrade

NEW SERVERS

Several services of HotSpotSystem.com are running on brand new servers. Here's a quick overview:

- Multiple IBM x3400 servers with Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processors (seperated web server and database server)
- Each server contains multiple SAS HDDs with RAID for redundancy
- Servers are hosted in Data Park which is located in the heart of the city
- Servers get 40 Gbit/s domestic bandwidth and 6 Gbit/s of international bandwidth
- Availability of electric current: 99,999 %
- Guaranteeing of regulated temperature: 99,999 %
- Availability of Internet connection: 99,5%

IMPROVED SECURITY

All client and operator pages are using SSL 128-bit data encryption to protect user's data.

IT'S STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO UPDATE YOUR ROUTER'S FIRMWARE to enable https connections on the end user pages.

To do this, just log in to your router's admin panel and run the setup command of the location. If you'd like to manually update the settings, you'll need to change http:// to https:// 2 times in the router's admin page. Go to Administration > HotSpot or Services > Hotspot, and
